Winter is fast approaching.
In addition to being a newspaper journalist I’ve been a first responder and worked in public safety as a firefighter, vehicle rescue technician and emergency management official both here in Mexico and the USA.
This time of year, it’s wise to do safety checks in your home.
First and foremost is heating safety. Never run your fireplace/propane heater all night. Always have an open window. Review the connections and functions of your fireplace and gas heaters. It is important to purchase a carbon monoxide detector and fire extinguisher. Don Pedro or Amazon Mexico have them.
After the rainy season have someone check your roof waterproofing. It’s also a good time to check your roof tank and water systems. Check your windows for leaks and drafts.
When you are out and about during the upcoming holiday season remember, we have cool mornings and evenings and mild to warm afternoons. Sweaters rule. During this season, personal safety is a watchword. Practice defensive driving and pedestrian safety as well as a heads up with your personal possessions.

To Mayor (Presidente) Trejo for recognizing that traffic safety needs improvement. He also plans to regulate truck traffic.
AND a big raspberry to the reckless trucks and cars who continue to speed and make unsafe lane changes.

Passings & Passages
Another Mover and Shaker in San Miguel has passed.
“It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of our Founder, Director and friend, Rob Lerner. This week, Rob succumbed to complications from lymphoma, leaving a void that will be felt throughout our community,” announced a spokesman for i3. Lerner was the heart of i3, inspiring the organization with his vision and passion for sharing ideas that inform and inspire. As a long-time resident of San Miguel de Allende, Rob was an active community member. He contributed to the Science Club and supported Caminos de Agua.
“Our thoughts are with his partner, Diane Varney,” notes the i3 announcement.
