Insiders’ Emerging Artists at Galeria Potranca: Art for Today

By Iven Kelley-Dobson

In December, the monthly event at Galeria Potranca will move to Friday, December 20 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a wine & cheese reception. This month we will be introducing 6 new artists and their work.  Thirteen artists will be returning introducing new work. Among our artists this month you will meet:

ROMEO: A true Sanmiguelense, Romeo Naftali works in mixed-media. His work includes paintings and sculptures.  His sculptures are of founds objects, mostly automotive parts. Romeo is a motorcycle and car mechanic by profession, which allows him to mix his work with his passion of art.  You may have seen him driving around town in his “rat rod”, which is influenced by his fascination with the ‘rat rod style”,  which is what he builds to be a little more free... putting old things... in cars... sometimes without any apparent sense! Romeo lives by the motto: “RUST IS NOT A CRIME”.  You too, will be fascinated by his work.

LU TREJO: Guadalupe Trejo, a native of Mexico City, is a Mexican folk art teacher and artist who has called San Miguel de Allende home since 1991. Lu Trejo’s 30 year artistic journey has been deeply influenced by her extensive studies in Oaxaca, where she trained alongside master craftsmen. In 2022, she developed a unique technique using paper paste, which mimics the appearance of ceramics and glazed clay. Her paintings blend a variety of materials, incorporating textiles, paper, and other mixed-media techniques to create vibrant works that celebrate Mexican culture, traditions, and festive rituals. She has designed clothing and accessories for renowned brands such as Flor de Cielo and Lucia Macarena, using traditional Mexican textiles. You will find her work is whimsical, just leaving you with a big smile.

JARED: A native of Morelia, Jared Jiménez, is a visual artist and a musician who explores pre-Hispanic themes in both artistic practices. Jared studied fine arts and music at Bellas Artes in Morelia. His recent series of paintings grows out of his reinterpretation of the imagery of the codices, the only books by indigenous Mexicans to survive the conquest. Another series is based on his enthusiasm for a contemporary indigenous dance phenomenon known as Los Kurpites. He has played with Jadhex Sonidos Prehispánicos since 2008, touring with them throughout Mexico. Closer to home, he plays cumbia with Grupo Malo at many San Miguel night spots. Jared has called San Miguel home for five years.

MARK: Since his first visit to San Miguel de Allende in 1995, Mark Rewarts made his dream of living in our beautiful town a reality in 2018 and truly feels San Miguel is now his forever home.  His life-long career in the creative arts combined with his extensive international travels have strongly influenced his work.  A ceramicist, Mark’s technique is hand-building.  He delights in the challenge of creating light and delicate work that defies the appearance of hand-building. You will be in awe of his detailed work and design.

Approximately 70% of the artists represented at Galeria Potranca are Mexican artists, most of whom have never shown their work to the public before.  Many of the artists could be considered “outsider artists” in that they have not had formal art training but their talent and creativity are natural and readily apparent, while others have had studied art and techniques (some having art degrees).

Our goal at Galeria Potranca is to give artists a platform to show their work and meet the public. This gives them the opportunity to receive feedback and encouragement from the public.

In January we will be introducing a second, mid-month,pop-up event in addition to our FINAL FRIDAY event.  Come and enjoy wine & cheese at both events every second and final friday from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Galeria Potranca is guided by Iven Kelley-Dobson who brings a lifelong career as an entrepreneur in the creative fields of floral, art, and interior design.  With his husband, Jim, he has called San Miguel home since 2011. His work in Galeria Potranca is called “FACES”, mixed media sculptures created from found objects.
