There are a lot of great female singers in this town and this young lady, Frad Mulier from México City, is surely one of them. I had the chance to chat with Frad recently for Insiders’ News’ Music Spotlight.
FF: Thanks for this interview Frad. I know you are new to San Miguel and it is such a treat hearing you and your band. You have such a cool style. When did you first know you had a voice?
FM: At 15 years old for a school concert, my music teacher asked me the favour to cover for a kid who got sick; without a vocalist the other kids will not perform, so I did it.
FF: When did you realize you wanted to be a professional singer?
FM: When I realized that the people cared. When I saw in their faces a tear, joy AND other feelings.
FF: I love that you have a noticeable trust with your band on stage. Where did you meet and what year did you decide to create together?
FM: Hidalgo in 2016. It was our first concert together. I remember it was un-plugged and I was so nervous about how to talk to the audience.
FF: I’ve seen you with one note, one vocal phrase - just bring people to their knees in awe of how you can cover their favorite song. You are a really talented singer with an incredible range and depth of emotion for belting out a song with all your heart and soul. Authenticity is what comes to mind when I hear you sing. You seem so in control too. Do you still get nervous before a gig?
FM: Yes, I get nervous before every gig.
FF: You’d never know. I’ve only ever heard you sing covers, do you write your own songs?
FM: Yes, we do write but we are never totally comfortable with them. We record almost every year demos in some studios. We want to record some again in January.
FF: That’s great I hope you do! I’ll pay for a download to hear you sing! You could be a recording star, I hope you go for it! You can sing traditional Spanish so beautifully along with other styles like rock n roll, blues and RnB and folk. I know you have really worked on these styles…what else am I missing?
FM: I prefer to sing Rock, that is my favorite style. I try to do other styles because Javier, my boyfriend and band mate, listens all the time to different music… I listen to music now that I never knew existed.
FF: I hope our readers get the chance to hear you soon. What are your up coming events?
FM: We will be in San Miguel until the end of April, then we are traveling to Guatemala and Oaxaca for 5 months. So, in the meantime, we will perform every Thursday in Trina Cantina, at Paprika we have some shows and we are preparing some theater shows for January.
FF: So, where do you see yourself in 5 years?
FM: I see myself being happy singing in places I like. We have some dates in Canada this next year, so traveling the next 5 years sounds cool.
FF: If there was anything you might share with young musicians on getting started as a singer, what would it be?
FM: Sing all the time, go to open mics and jam sessions, always play with better musicians than you. Try to get in touch with people you admire and if you have a band, hire the best people you can.
FF: Great advice!
FM: Music should be fun, for sure we need to pay the bills but playing music is one of the best things that exist. I try to be around people that love life, that love to smile.
