If there was any doubt that San Miguel is a design center of international importance, that doubt is now dispelled by the June 2024 issue of Veranda Magazine. With nearly half a million circulation, Veranda is one of the most important interior design magazines in North America. Titled simply “The Mexico Issue”, the June/July edition is practically a monopoly of San Miguel designers.
Although the featured projects vary in style, they all have in common great originality, high design criteria, authenticity, and likely interest for the hundreds of thousands of readers who are will share the photos and stories. This is a Mexico that will be new to many readers.
Designer Michelle Nussbaumer's San Miguel property and designer Laura Kirar's hacienda reflect very rustic and unpretentious aesthetics. Both designers work in a wide range of styles internationally, and both have bases in San Miguel. One is reminded of the seminal work of the late Marsha Brown of San Miguel and Houston, who many years ago reimagined what a rustic hacienda might look like without any visible modernizations.
On the other end of the spectrum, Fisher Weisman's Mexico City home in Polanco is very plush and modern, filled with Fisher´s original art and the firm´s original designs and furnishings. Though also based in San Francisco, California, their San Miguel home has been widely published and is an example of the most classic San Miguel style. Cris Briger is a featured collector and designer with strong ties to San Miguel, and represents a lifetime loyalty to antiques and the best of design.
Fashion designer Jenne Maag, while based in Merida in a stunning Porifirato mansion, is featured with one of her interests, a vast collection of curated 20th century Mexican sterling silver jewelry. Maag shops in San Miguel, creating with EVOS one of a kind furnishings, as well a delving into local shopping opportunites.
San Miguel is not just a destination, at its best is a hub for creativity inspired by biculturalism, this is the essence of these published works.
