Weather or Whether: The Rainy Season has Begun

By Bill Wilson

On the afternoon of June 20th the skies opened over over San Miguel and gave us more than three inches. Our hurricane season (the driver of our rainy season) begins in June and so far we have had Hurricane Beryl and several tropical storms.

Current rain data: for the rainy season year ( my weather stations define as June to June) so far as of the first week of July: 8.36 inches for the season and for July: 3.62 inches.

When venturing out to do shopping, chores, or dining check the skies and tote along a rain jacket or umbrella. Flooding in Centro can be hazardous so heads up.

And our local network (streaming personal stations) has gained a new station. Dr. Rodrigo Garibay Meijueiro, owner of Dusty Puppies, and patron of orphaned opossums, has installed a station. Great location, as most stations, about six, are in the Centro area or outside of the Centro. The vet has long posted weather pictures to Facebook and is working on getting the station to communicate to the networks. Both Ambient and WU have apps (Android and iOS) and websites that display weather stations and streaming data from worldwide stations. You get local, real-time data not weather at the airport.

Great Caesar's Ghost

Caesar Salad is 100 years old and it began in Mexico. An Italian immigrant, Caesar Cardini, is believed to have invented the dish — consisting of Romaine lettuce, oil, Worcestershire sauce, lemons, eggs, and Parmesan cheese — at his restaurant Caesar’s Place, in Tijuana. “A star was born” on July 4, 1924, the Associated Press declared. Tijuana celebrated the anniversary by holding a three-day food and wine festival and unveiling a statue. The salad is served at 35% of US restaurants, and its sustained popularity is an outlier compared to other dishes from the early 1900s, like creamed liver loaf or aspic.

Tip of the Hat & Raspberry

A tip of the Hat goes to the affable Alfredo, a helper at our fantastic City Market. He's always ready to help a befuddled shopper whether it's a problem navigating the Orange affinity card, finding a US product, or translating an equivalent. AND Alfredo is not just the only one at City Market. Since the beautiful supermarket opened two years ago the staff has been overly helpful. It's a great place to shop and the human element, the workers, make it all happen. Mil gracias and a tip of the sombrero. And tip the baggers, please.

AND a raspberry to the folks responsible for the recent traffic snafu up at the Luciernaga Mall. Probably the second biggest intersection in our colonial town. The traffic lights were out for a few days and Tránsitos did their best to handle the congestion. Up until a few years ago, we did not have traffic lights. Jokingly, when we first came here almost 20 years ago we were told "Stop signs are a suggestion."

Word Salad

Huracan (/ˈhʊrəkən, ˈhʊrəkɑːn/; Spanish: Huracán; Mayan languages: Hunraqan, "one legged"), often referred to as U Kʼux Kaj, the "Heart of Sky", is a Kʼicheʼ Maya god of wind, storm, fire and one of the creator deities who participated in all three attempts at creating humanity. In central Mexico, Tláloc is the god of rain for the Aztecs.

Fun Facts

Mexico City is the second largest city in the Western Hemisphere next to São Paulo, Brazil. And our country is the world's leading producer of avocados.

Let's All Go to the Movies

A great place to hang out when the rains interrupt your plans is Cinemex's multi-screen movie theater. At the mall, the theater offers films in English and Spanish and a food court. Grab an affinity card and earn free tickets and food.

Hasta el próximo mes!
